Western Star 4700 TractorA couple of weeks ago, we wrote a story on the Western Star 4700 that launched March 2011 to six targeted vocational segments. According to a recent press release, the feedback from the vocational customers was really positive which fueled Western Star to expand the options for the 4700 including Hendrickson and Watson Chalin lift axles, new roof fairings and side extenders, Chalmers Suspension and best of all, expansion to a tractor configuration.

Now you can have the rugged durability the 4700 provides with several fifth wheel options for bulk hauling, local delivery and construction applications.

According to the press release, the 4700 tractor is available in a set-forward and set-back day cab configuration and incorporates the same high visibility hood we talked about in our earlier blog.  You also get a wide variety of fifth wheel and wheelbase selections. Add to that, the 4700 offers a broad power range from the Cummins ISC and ISL engines, to the Detroit™ DD13®. Ratings range from 260 hp to 470 hp. Transmission options include the Allison automatic, Eaton manual, and Eaton UltraShift®PLUS.

All of these options are available now so if you’re in the market for a new Western Star, the 4700 will work for just about any application.

Western Star 6900 Powertrain Options

More news from Western Star this week involves additional powertrain options for the 6900.  The 15.6 liter Detroit™ DD16® has been added to the line-up of engines available.  This bad boy features up to 600 hp and 2,050 lb per feet of torque, and torque curve that can handle even the heaviest loads.  All the loggers, miners and oil field folks will want this in their Star.

Western Star 6900There’s also a new option for the Twin Steer model.  The Detroit Series 60® Tier 3 engine is for those who need an engine that can handle the tough stuff but is  fuel efficient and keeps maintenance and operational costs to a minimum.  It does this with a single stage turbo and no EGR.

The last piece of news is that you can now get Allison RDS 4500 and 4700 automatic transmissions in the Twin Steer 6900.  According to the press release, these transmissions are ideal for oil pumping applications and improve performance, durability and fuel efficiency.  The transmissions’ vehicle propulsion mode puts power to the wheels in rugged or remote locations, while stationary mode provides power the pumps, winches and augers in the field.

These powertrain options are also available for order now so make sure you take into account these new options when you snap up your next Star.
